Antimicrobial Ceramic Filters for Water Bio-Decontamination

چکیده
Bio-contamination of water through biofouling, which involves the natural colonization submerged surfaces by waterborne organisms, is a global socio-economic concern, allied to premature materials bio-corrosion and high human health risks. Most effective strategies release toxic persistent disinfectant compounds into aquatic medium, causing environmental problems leading more stringent legislation regarding their use. To minimize these side effects, newly non-biocide-release coating strategy suitable for several polymeric matrices, namely polydimethylsiloxane polyurethane (PU)-based coatings, was used generate antimicrobial ceramic filters bio-decontamination. The best results, in terms activity biocide release, showed an expressed delay decrease up 66% population methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on coated with coatings containing grafted Econea biocide, no evidence after being 45 days water. Biocidal PU-based were also less prone Enterococcus faecalis biofilm formation under flow conditions average reduction 60% 48 h compared pristine surface. show be potential eco-friendly alternative minimizing risks associated biofouling water-based industrial systems.

Microbiological effectiveness of locally produced ceramic filters for drinking water treatment in Cambodia.
Low-cost options for the treatment of drinking water at the household level are being explored by the Cambodian government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in Cambodia, where many lack access to improved drinking water sources and diarrhoeal diseases are the most prevalent cause of death in children under 5 years of age. The ceramic water purifier (CWP), a locally produced, low...
متن کاملCritical parameters in the production of ceramic pot filters for household water treatment in developing countries.
The need to improve the access to safe water is generally recognized for the benefit of public health in developing countries. This study's objective was to identify critical parameters which are essential for improving the performance of ceramic pot filters (CPFs) as a point-of-use water treatment system. Defining critical production parameters was also relevant to confirm that CPFs with high-...
متن کاملPorous Ceramic Filters through 3d Printing
This paper describes current and on-going work in adapting Z-Corp 3D printers to operate with low-cost ceramic materials. The components produced with these clay-based ceramic powders can be fired to produce strong, complex and lightweight ceramic parts. The final material properties, including the porosity of the parts, can be controlled through the part design and, potentially, through additi...
متن کاملA post-implementation evaluation of ceramic water filters distributed to tsunami-affected communities in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. During recovery, the Red Cross distributed approximately 12,000 free ceramic water filters. This cross-sectional study was an independent post-implementation assessment of 452 households that received filters, to determine the proportion still using filters, household characteristics associated with use, and quality of household drinkin...
